Tiki Tuesday: Jungle Birb!

Alright, sing it with me! “Iiiiiiin the tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room, the tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room, Ooooh, the birds sing words and the flowers croon, iiiin tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki, tiki room!”

Ah, isn’t that just delightful!

Anyways, I came across this wonderful recipe, created in a city I used to live in – The Jungle Bird. It is a fantastic combination of rum, campari, citrus, and fruit flavors.

  • 1.5oz Dark Rum (I used Myer’s)
  • .75oz Campari
  • .5oz Simple
  • .5oz Lime Juice
  • 1.5oz Pineapple Juice
  • 3-4 drops Bittermens’ Tiki Bitters (not in the original recipe but bitters make everything better)

The bitterness of the Campari plays nicely with the lime, pineapple, and underlying sweetness of the rum. But my wife wanted something a bit more “fun”, so I went to back to the drawing board bar and came up with this concoction:

  • 1.5oz Dark Rum (again, Myers is just fine)
  • .5oz Funky Rum (a rhum agricole would be preferable, but I only had Barbancourt)
  • .75oz Campari
  • .5oz Lime Juice
  • .25oz Allspice Dram (essentially rum infused with allspice and vanilla, will post my recipe for it sometime)
  • 3-5 drops Tiki Bitters
  • 2oz (more more, to taste) of a 1-to-1 mix of mango/pineapple juice

This drink is FUN. And dangerous. It goes down easy and packs a punch. It’s loosely based on the Jungle Bird, but different enough that I should probably name it.
